Media Release — Book Publishers Association of Alberta Celebrates Milestone 50th Anniversary

Edmonton — The Book Publishers Association of Alberta (BPAA) is excited to recognize its 50th anniversary today, on March 14, 2025. Since its establishment in 1975, the BPAA has supported the development of the book publishing industry in Alberta and contributed significantly to the current vitality of the publishing landscape in the province.

Over the past 50 years, the BPAA spearheaded innovative projects that increased access to and awareness of Alberta books. The Best of the West, Books from Home, and Read Alberta Books collective marketing initiatives highlighted the breadth of books published in Alberta, while programs like the groundbreaking Read Alberta eBook Collection provided Alberta libraries with Alberta-published eBooks. The BPAA was also the first regional book publishing association to work with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to create DAISY accessible audiobooks and it has continued to be a leader in accessible publishing with the launch of the Accessible Alberta: eBooks for Everyone Collection. “The BPAA has always been intentional about supporting Alberta book publishers and connecting Alberta libraries, bookstores, schools, and readers with local content,” said Kieran Leblanc, Executive Director of the BPAA. “As we recognize this significant milestone and reflect on the past 50 years of the association, we look forward to where we can grow from here and the relationships we can continue to strengthen.”

The BPAA’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated at the Alberta Book Publishing Awards Gala, which will include special programming to commemorate the anniversary. The gala is scheduled for September 18, 2025 and registration details will be released in July. In the meantime, the BPAA encourages people to share their memories and stories of the association to be incorporated into the programming for the celebration. Memories can be shared by email (info@bookpublishers.ab.ca) or on social media using the hashtag #BPAA50Years.
