Our member publishers reflect the breadth and quality of Alberta’s book publishing community.

BPAA Full Members

Full members of the BPAA are traditional Alberta book publishers that have been in operation for at least two years, publish books as a primary, not an occasional activity, and release at least one new title per year.

Athabasca University Press

Athabasca University Press is Canada’s first open access scholarly press. Founded in 2007 with the principal aim of reducing barriers to knowledge and increasing access to scholarship, AU Press is committed to bringing the work of emerging and established scholars to the public. With both an open access journal and book program, we make a substantial contribution to a growing body of academic and literary work that is made available to a global readership at no cost to the reader. Our ebooks and print books are distributed worldwide and can be found at your favourite bookstore, online retailer, and library.

Brush Education Inc.

Based in Edmonton, Brush Education publishes books for college, university and professional audiences. Its books cover medical and health sciences, education and K9 training. Brush has published over 100 authors from across Canada, the US and Europe.

Durvile & UpRoute

Durvile & UpRoute is a small-but-mighty indie press that publishes books by authors who have the foresight to bring new knowledge and wisdom to the world. The Durvile imprint publishes the True Cases series and fascinating biographies, and the UpRoute imprint focuses on the Spirit of Nature Indigenous series, the Every River Lit series, and other brave artistic and cultural ventures.

Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing

EDGE publishes thought-provoking full length novels and anthologies of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Featuring works by established authors and emerging new voices, EDGE is pleased to provide quality literary entertainment in both print and pixels.

Eschia Books

Based in Stony Plain, Eschia Books is an Indigenous-owned publishing house with a mandate to publish books that spark interest in Indigenous cultures and engage more young readers, encouraging understanding through genuine, insightful writing.

Folklore Publishing

Folklore Publishing was founded in 1998 with a mandate to publish well-written and accessible popular histories drawn from North America’s past. Today we have over 86 titles in print that cover history, biography, humour and other popular topics as we continue to build a dynamic list. Folklore Publishing also publishes under two imprints—Icon Press and Full Court Press.

Freehand Books

Freehand Books was established in 2007 with a simple mandate: to publish excellent literature by Canadian authors. Our list is an aesthetically diverse, award-winning collection of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction by both established authors and exciting new voices.

Frontenac House

Since 2000, Calgary’s Frontenac House has published a wide variety of titles in categories like poetry, aviation, political satire, fiction, art and photography. Frontenac is best known for its annual Quartet of poetry books.

Laksa Media Groups

Laksa Media Groups Inc. publishes general audience and literary experimental fiction and narrative non-fiction books. Our mission is to create opportunities to ‘pay forward’ and ‘give back’ through our publishing program. Our tag line is Read for a Cause, Write for a Cause, Help a Cause. A portion of our net revenue from each book project goes to support a charitable organization, project or event.

NeWest Press

NeWest Press publishes books by established and emerging authors. The Press has contributed to the Canadian literary scene through the Nunatuk First Fiction, Writer As Critic and Prairie Play Series, as well as through poetry, fiction, non-fiction and mystery titles.

Renegade Arts Entertainment

Renegade Arts Entertainment produces comic books, audio books, movies, animation and novels. We also develop merchandise and games.

Stonehouse Publishing

Founded by two friends who share a love of literature and history, Stonehouse Publishing is an emerging Canadian publishing house, specializing in historical fiction and literary fiction. As a new and small company, Stonehouse Publishing publishes four to five new titles per year. 

Tyche Books

Tyche Books is a small press specializing in science fiction and fantasy anthologies, novels, and non-fiction, all available as ebooks and trade paperbacks. We seek to discover new voices and propel established authors further along their journey.

University of Alberta Press

UAlberta Press is a contemporary, award-winning publisher of scholarly and creative books distinguished by their editorial care, exceptional design, and global reach.

University of Calgary Press

The University of Calgary Press publishes peer-reviewed scholarly work across the social sciences. Our areas of specialization include Environmental History, Energy Histories, Cultures, and Politics, Northern Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, African Studies, Global Indigenous Studies, Philosophy of Science, and beyond. Through Open Access publishing we make scholarship freely available to students, researchers, and readers everywhere.

Our Brave & Brilliant literary series publishes bold and lively fiction, poetry, and everything between and beyond, bringing bold and unique Canadian literary voices to the fore.

LCR Publishing, an imprint of the University of Calgary Press, publishes specialized academic work, technical reports, and cutting-edge scholarship that falls outside the strict format of the academic monograph.

Alpine Book Peddlers

Alpine Book Peddlers is a family-owned book distributor and wholesaler based in Canmore. We specialize in helping all kinds of retailers in the Canadian Rockies, Alberta, and Eastern B.C. (including giftshops, outdoor stores, visitor centres, bookstores, and more), to source their book sections. We also ship to retailers across North America. We work primarily with local, independent businesses and hope to have a positive impact on our local book community.

Broadview Press

An independent academic publisher that focuses on the humanities, Broadview has offices located across Canada. The Press employs over 25 people, has over 500 titles in print, and publishes approximately 50 titles a year.

Hingston & Olsen Publishing

Hingston & Olsen Publishing (H&O) is an independent publisher based in Alberta, Canada. Founded in the summer of 2015 by author/journalist Michael Hingston and designer Natalie Olsen as a means of finding out just how far an untested idea could be taken. In a world where print material is rapidly losing ground to all things digital, H&O remain stubborn, true believers in the power of the physical book.
