Indigenous Subject Headings II: BISAC, Thema, and Advanced Metadata
2023-11-23 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am MST
ACP and BPAA members are invited to join our joint professional development session, Indigenous Subject Headings II: BISAC, Thema, and Advanced Metadata, on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at 10:00 – 11:30 am MST.
In our first Decolonizing Subject Headings professional development session, a panel of librarians shared their efforts to create a more inclusive environment for books by and about Indigenous peoples within existing library systems such as Library of Congress subject codes. Now, ACP and BPAA invite their members to join Elizabeth Barker of Orca Book Publishers, Tom Richardson of BookNet Canada, Lauren Stewart of BookNet Canada, and moderator Mat Buntin of University of Alberta Press for an overview of current tagging systems used by publishers, Thema and BISAC. The session will explore how publishers can best represent books by and about Indigenous peoples within systems that have not yet been decolonized. Presenters will discuss what is taking place in and outside of what is currently known as Canada to indigenize subject codes, and how publishers can use BISAC, Thema, and advanced metadata to achieve equitable, appropriate, and broad visibility for their titles.
Members may share their questions ahead of time as part of this session’s registration or bring them to the session to be answered live. Note that this session will be recorded and captioned for ACP and BPAA members’ future reference.
