Indexing for Publishers

November 20 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm MST

The Book Publishers Association of Alberta is pleased to announce the upcoming webinar entitled Indexing for Publishers, presented by Alexandra Peace and Jolanta Komornicka.

Curious about indexing and how it impacts you as a publisher? This session introduces the basics of the indexing process, explains how an index is an asset in marketing the book, and explores how publishers and indexers can work together. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A portion.

This event is free and limited to members of the BPAA. Please register to reserve your spot by 4:30 pm MT on Tuesday, November 19. A recording of the webinar will be available for those who are unable to attend live.

Woman with short, wavy white hair, glasses propped on top of head. Smiling. Wearing a multi-coloured blue scarf. Alexandra Peace edits, proofreads, and indexes in rural Nova Scotia within a strong national and international network of colleagues, and teaches indexing at the Chang School, Toronto Metropolitan University. Alex was president of the Indexing Society of Canada / Société Canadienne d’indexation for seven years and now is happily past president. Among the memorable works she has indexed are several volumes of the Truth and Reconciliation Report, a book about how laundry is done at long-term care facilities and what that shows about neoliberalism, and a collection of cake recipes. Alex can be inveigled into talking about indexing at the drop of a hat, unless she is out walking her dogs at any one of five local beaches. Alexandra has won volunteer awards from both Editors Canada and ISC/SCI.

Person with curly brown hair and red glasses, wearing a navy blue cardigan over a maroon shirt, reading an orange book while smiling.Jolanta Komornicka is an indexer, editor, and proofreader. She currently serves as the co-president of the Indexing Society of Canada/Société canadienne d’indexation and as co-chair of the KWG Twig of Editors Canada. She came to the publishing world by way of academia, where she was an assistant professor of medieval history. When the pandemic shut down her university as she was teaching about the Black Death, Jola found herself suddenly relevant to the modern world and without a job. Turning to indexing and editing has been fantastic. Some of the most fun projects were a book on the X-Men and a history of Veracruz in the 17th-18th centuries. This fall, she’s teaching a course on indexing through Library Juice Academy.
